The UK secured more than £9.6 billion of foreign investment ahead of the Global Investment Summit (GIS), new figures have revealed.
The inaugural event, launching today, Tuesday 19 October 2021, seeks to encourage foreign investment by “showcasing the best of British innovation”.
According to the report, an estimated 30,000 new jobs will be created in the UK after overseas investors agreed to invest almost £10 billion in 18 new green projects.
This includes electric utility company Iberdrola, which plans to invest £6 billion in offshore wind farms, and Viridor, owned by US firm KKR, which plans to invest £1 billion into cutting-edge decarbonisation technology across five of their UK sites.
Global logistics firm Prologis, meanwhile, intends to invest £1.5 billion over the next three years to develop net-zero carbon warehouses across London, the South-East and Midlands.
Eren Paper, owned by Turkish conglomerate Eren Holding, Peer-to-peer lending firm Zopa, Budweiser Brewing Group, the UK arm of global brewer AB InBev, Getir, HiPoint AG, Ultimate Battery Company, Global Marine, HyPoint, Crowdz, Treedom, Tes Amm, Jacobs, Huaneng and Sumitomo Corporation are also among those who plan to invest in new green energy projects over the next decade.
Commenting on the event, International Trade Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: “The UK is the best investment destination in the world and our Investment Atlas will help to drive more investment into green industries across the UK, and make it easier for businesses to make decisions on where and what to invest in.
“These investment deals announced today will create jobs, boost the economy, spread prosperity and level up the country as we build back better and greener.”
The Department for International Trade took advantage of the event to also launch a new Investment Atlas. The online hub is designed to help foreign investors identify high priority investment opportunities across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
More than 50 investment opportunities will be available at launch, the Government added.
