UK creative industries have grown five times faster than the economy as a whole, new figures have revealed.
The research, published by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DDCMS), shows that the creative industries, which include tech, film and television, and advertising and marketing, contributed £111.7 billion to the UK economy in 2018.
Representing a daily contribution of around £306 million, it means that the creative industries are growing five times faster than the national economy, up 7.4 per cent compared to 1.4 per cent.
The largest contributors over the year were creative tech businesses, which contributed £45.4 billion in 2018, followed by film and television (£20.8 billion).
The digital economy, meanwhile, contributed £149 billion over the same period, up 7.9 per cent, while the cultural sector contributed £32.3 billion, an increase of 2.7 per cent
Commenting on the figures, Minister for the Creative Industries, Nigel Adams, said: “The creative industries encompass the best and brightest of UK businesses and these figures paint a vibrant picture of creativity and talent in our country today.
“I would like to congratulate all those within the sector whose hard work and ingenuity means the industry is making a staggering contribution of nearly £13 million to the national economy every hour.”
