A further £70 million in grants has been awarded to struggling arts and heritage organisations through the Culture Recovery Fund, it has been revealed.
The Government said 35 iconic venues will be the first to receive grants of between £1 million and £3 million in the latest tranche of funding.
The £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund was announcing this year during the Covid-19 pandemic to protect organisations, such as theatres, music venues, museums and galleries, from coronavirus disruption by covering the costs of recovery.
According to the latest report, grant funding has been awarded to “some of the nation’s most significant stages”, including Shakespeare’s Globe, the Old Vic, Sheffield Crucible, Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the Theatre Royal Plymouth.
Regionally, three in 10 grants were awarded to venues in London.
Welcoming the scheme, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said: “As part of our unprecedented £1.57 billion rescue fund, today we’re saving British cultural icons with large grants of up to £3 million – from Shakespeare’s Globe to the Sheffield Crucible.
“These places and organisations are irreplaceable parts of our heritage and what make us the cultural superpower we are. This vital funding will secure their future and protect jobs right away.”
The announcement comes after it was recently revealed that 1,385 organisations – including the Cavern Club in Liverpool and the Royal Academy of Dance in London – would benefit from £257 million in funding through the Culture Recovery Fund.
It means now more than £500 million has been delivered to arts and heritage organisations to cover the costs of reopening and restarting performances when it is safe to do.
The Culture Recovery Fund is just one of many initiatives launched by the Government to protect vulnerable businesses. The rescue package also includes Business Rates Relief, the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) and grant funding of up to £25,000 available through the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund.
