New Covid-19 testing regime to keep international trade “moving freely”

Hauliers and other exempt professionals entering the UK will benefit from an enhanced Covid-19 testing regime to ensure goods can move in and out of the country safely and smoothly, it has been announced.

Coming into force on 06 April 2021, the new regime will see thousands of rapid testing kits deployed across sites across Britain.
Here’s what you need to know:
Under the new regulations, a limited number of exempt professions – including hauliers, aircraft crew and pilots, seasonal agricultural workers, and more – will benefit from a bespoke Covid-19 testing regime.
Exempt individuals arriving in the UK and who stay for longer than two days will be required to take a test before the end of day two via a home testing kit or from one of several new workplace or community testing sites.
Meanwhile, those remaining in the UK for any longer than two days will be required to take a further test every three days.
It means that hauliers or other exempt professionals staying for two days or fewer are not required to take a test, although travellers arriving from some countries may be asked to complete a pre-departure test.
Commenting on the new regime, the Department of Health and Social Care said: “Earlier this year the government strengthened its border regime, putting new controls in place to protect the UK from the spread of COVID-19 and new variants entering.
“From 6 April bespoke testing will be made available to certain professions to enable them to carry out their roles whilst providing an additional layer of protection to help ensure positive cases are detected.”
