Are you up to date with the lesser-known changes to payroll?

Most people will be aware of the big changes to key payroll rates that took place at the start of April.

This included an increase to the National Minimum Wages rates, as follows:

23 and over 21 to 22 18 to 20 Under 18 Apprentice
April 2022 £9.50 £9.18 £6.83 £4.81 £4.81

Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate if they’re either aged under 19 or aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship.

However, there are many other smaller changes that employers need to be aware of. We have summarised these below:

  • From 3 April 2022, the first six weeks of Statutory Maternity Pay and Statutory Adoption Pay remain the same, at 90% of the employee’s average weekly earnings (AWE).
  • The statutory weekly rate for all weeks after this will be the lower of 90% of AWE or £156.66.
  • Statutory Paternity Pay, Statutory Shared Parental Pay and Statutory Parental Bereavement Pay will all share the same weekly rate of £156.66 or 90% of AWE, whichever is lower.
  • The minimum average weekly earnings required to qualify for SSP, or these family-related payments has increased to £123 per week (up from £120 per week).
  • From 6 April 2022, the rate of Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) increased to £99.35 per week (up from £96.35 per week).

Please also remember that we have now returned to the normal Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) rules and the COVID-19 related Statutory Sick Pay Rebate Scheme has closed.
